Crime and the Video Games Debate

A new study released by Texas University shows that there is no direct correlation between those exposed to violent video games and increasing crime statistics. The author of the study, Christopher Ferguson of Texas A&M International University, exposes that violent video games such as ‘Grand Theft Auto’ and their like, do not desensitise the game player and encourage them to go out and commit criminal behaviour. The study, instead comes to the conclusion that ‘moral panic’ sets in after a violent or horrific crime has taken place and video games are seen as an easy target for politicians, media and parents to blame.

Today the UK has officialy fallen into a recession after the Office for National Statistics released figures showing that the country’s economy has shrunk in two successive quarters. Crime Figures Rise in Economic Downturn

It’s not exactly rocket science to figure out that the economic downturn is forcing more people to consider criminal activity as a way to make ends meet. Latest police figures are showing dramatic increases in robbery and burglary within the UK. The most affected area was Greater Manchester, where a stark 21% increase in reported incidents has occured. These are real life facts of what recession brings upon a country.

Inauguration Security

On the 20th of January 2009, America will come to a stand still as Barack Obama’s inauguration as the next President of the United States takes place. One thing is for sure, it will be a security nightmare to manage. Normally, an inauguration of a new president is considered a National Special Security Event, which means the Secret Service is in charge of the countries security for that day. However, given the circumstances, as America makes history by electing its first black president, the country will be under the control of the Secret Service for 4 days.

2009 – Year of the Counterfeit Scammer

As if the retail trade isn’t having a tough enough start to the new year, many retailers are now being urged to be extremely vigilant when it comes to checking for counterfeit money. Organised criminals have upped their game in reproducing fake notes and despite the Bank of England’s efforts to make our notes hard to reproduce, there are an estimated 290,000 counterfeit notes circulating in the UK – a total value of £5.8 million.

Crime Maps Online

The latest offering from the police forces in England and Wales to help combat crime is publishing interactive maps online showing crime patterns prevalent in any particular area. The Metropolitan Police force already have a crime map that is available to the public. But the new maps will highlight major offences including robbery, theft, car-crime, and violence to the public and be updated monthly.
