Act of Sabotage!!

Filed under: Crime News — admin @ 1:53 pm

This week in Scotland saw the third anniversary of the 3,500 cyclist Etape Caledonia race which runs through Perthshire in aid of the MacMillan Cancer Support. This 81 mile race is now one of the biggest in Britain, but despite this, it was subjected to an audacious act of sabotage. The race which raises money for a good cause, is unpopular with a minority of the locals as the main road is closed for a few hours.

Dermot Murnaghan of Sky News was among the riders, commented, “I was at the bottom of a large hill when I got a flat front tyre I managed to get it sorted and about 200 yards up the road I got another.” It turned out that mindless individuals had poured grey carpet tacks along most of the road.

With some of the experienced cyclists reaching speeds of around 40mph a front tyre blow out could have resulted in a serious accident. Imagine coming off a bike at 40mph and sliding across a road covered in carpet tacks! This act must put any cycle event in the UK into jeopardy, as personal safety of the cyclists is at stake, if any roads have to be closed.

Last year at the same event there was a major demonstration by the Against Closed Roads Events. This cycle race is for a worthy legitimate organisation, why do these people object? The road was only closed for a few hours. This is now in the hands of the local Police who are treating it ‘very seriously’.
